St. John’s College defeated UConn in a landslide in the tournament finals to become the Big East champion for the second consecutive year. While the Red Storm looked strong in the 72-52 victory, an impressive collapse from the Huskies carried them to victory.
St. John’s opened with a 10-0 run and led by 17 points in the first half. The Huskies came out of the locker room more energized and tied the game at seven after a hot start to the second half.

But as the Red Storm returned to dominance, that momentum evaporated—and the Huskies began to fall further and further behind. In one particularly futile sequence, UConn missed four straight scoring opportunities and was unable to capitalize on some otherwise solid rebounding.
The Huskies then missed their next nine field goal attempts and were completely scoreless for the final eight minutes of the game. UConn went 1-for-15 on its final field goal attempts, and its only points over the final nine points came on three free throws.
UConn head coach Dan Hurley was awarded an early technical seven and a half minutes into the game after exchanging notes with officials.
However, while the notoriously hotheaded coach continued to maintain his composure for the rest of the game, that didn’t stop his side from falling apart.
