According to Sports Illustrated’s Joey Arkley, the Spurs should add a 6-foot-5 former Golden State Warriors superstar to assist Victor Wembanyama.

“The Spurs are in the bottom 10s in 3-point shooting, so they should be interested in Thompson if he gets bought out,” Akeley wrote Thursday. “Even though Thompson’s contract is worth $17.5 million next season, I bet he’s willing to give up a good chunk of that to join a contender.”

In Thompson’s prime, he wreaked havoc on the Golden State Warriors alongside Stephen Curry. With his ultra-quick one-touch release and ability to properly utilize off-ball screens, Thompson quickly became one of the best three-point specialists in the NBA.

The 2014-15 season was Thompson’s breakthrough season with the Warriors. He averaged 21.7 points per game, shot 46.3% from the field and 43.9% from three-point range, and won the championship for the Warriors.

Thompson’s prolific three-point shooting and underrated on-ball defense helped Golden State win three additional championships during his 13-year tenure. While Thompson is no longer a superstar, he is still a valuable floor-spacing player, but he is not a complete defensive liability.

The four-time NBA champion is averaging 11.6 points per game while shooting 38.6 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from three-point range this season with the Dallas Mavericks.

For the Spurs, Thompson will undoubtedly be a championship-caliber addition to a team hungry for its first championship since 2014.
