“The allegations against Ms. Formella are extremely disturbing,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “She allegedly used her position of trust and authority as a mentor and coach to sexually assault an underage student. The type of abuse and conduct alleged in this case will not be tolerated.”

She was originally charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count of criminal sexual assault of a minor. However, in June 2025, she was charged with an additional 52 counts allegedly involving previously unknown sexual abuse and assaults on students, according to the prosecutor’s office.

When Formella appeared in court in June 2025, prosecutors revealed 52 new charges, for a total of 55, alleging that she had been grooming the victim since he was 14 years old.

There was also a section called “Performance,” in which she allegedly wrote that the victim would contact her soon to “try to resolve the issues between them.” She continued, “At the same time, I’m going to live my best life because I know he’s not who I thought he was and that he’s beneath me.”

When asked about the content allegedly found on her Notes app, Formella claimed it was an outlet for her anxiety and that any content involving sexual activity was related to her husband, according to the petition.

During his first court appearance, Formella was charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and one count of criminal sexual assault of a minor.

The court denied a motion to detain her pending trial and released her on the condition that she not enter Downers Grove South High School or have contact with anyone under the age of 18. She was also placed on administrative leave from the school.
