Southampton charged by EFL following ‘spying’ allegations from play-off opponents Middlesbrough

The English Football League (EFL) has accused Southampton of spying on their play-off rivals Middlesbrough ahead of Saturday’s first leg.

The charges relate to “alleged unauthorized filming on private property” before the game.

The EFL said in a statement: “Southampton Football Club has today been charged with breaching EFL regulations and the matter will be referred to the Independent Disciplinary Committee.”

“The EFL asked the clubs to comment after Middlesbrough received complaints that unauthorized filming was allegedly taking place on private property ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship play-off semi-final first leg between the two clubs.

“Under EFL regulations, Southampton would normally have 14 days to respond to an allegation. However, given the nature of the incident, the EFL will ask the Independent Disciplinary Committee to shorten the response period and schedule a hearing at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Southampton’s response

“Southampton Football Club acknowledges the statement issued by the EFL regarding an alleged breach of EFL regulations.

“We can confirm that we will cooperate fully with the league throughout this process.

“Due to the ongoing nature of this matter, the club is unable to comment further at this time.”
