Sony Said to host PlayStation State of Play Showcase in September

Sony is said to be planning to hold a State of Play presentation next month and may showcase its upcoming games. The PlayStation parent company last held a State of Play presentation in May, showcasing 14 PS5 and PS VR2 games, including the upcoming Astro Bot. Sony may not have any major first-party games coming soon, but its next State of Play stream may feature new trailers and launch details for already announced games.

Rumored match status

This information comes from Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, who has a proven track record in development in the gaming industry. According to him, Sony may hold a State of Play event in September. Grubb said on the latest episode of the Game Mess Mornings podcast: “…by the end of September, PlayStation may be hosting a State of Play instead of a Showcase.”

Game status can include details about upcoming first-party and third-party games. Additionally, Sony can finally take the wraps off the PS5 Pro, which is rumored to launch in late 2024.

“I don’t know if the PlayStation 5 Pro is in the State of Play, but where else would it be?” Grubb said on the podcast.

PS5 Pro expected to be released

The PS5 Pro has appeared in multiple leaks and rumors over the past few months, with some reports providing details about the console’s specs. Sony has yet to confirm plans for a PS5 Pro version, but industry insiders believe the console is in development.

As such, September’s State of Play livestream could be the ideal platform to announce the PS5 Pro ahead of its launch later this year.

According to previous leaks, PS5 Pro will come with improved system memory, CPU clock speed, and faster GPU. In leaked documents detailing the PS5 Pro, Sony reportedly told developers to focus on ray tracing capabilities in PS5 Pro games, suggesting that ray tracing performance will be improved. The document also claims that the PS5 Pro’s GPU rendering is expected to be “approximately 45% faster than the standard PlayStation 5.”

Meanwhile, Sony is gearing up to launch its next first-party game, Astro Bot, on September 7. Astro Bot is the follow-up to 202’s Astro’s Playroom, and as a free showcase for the capabilities of the DualSense controller on PS5, Astro Bot is a full-fledged game with over 6 galaxies and over 80 levels to explore.

The game was announced at Sony’s last State of Play event in May, when the company made several new announcements for upcoming PS5 and PS VR2 games and confirmed a PC port of God of War Ragnarök.
