Slack for Android Could Have Exposed Your Password: Here’s How to Reset

Slack’s Android app accidentally logged in users’ credentials in plain text, according to reports. The company has reportedly now sent an email to users of Slack for Android asking them to keep their passwords. According to the email, from December 21, 2020, to January 21, 2021, the Android version of the Slack app stored users’ credentials in plain text. This means other apps on the affected phone can access the credentials. You should also wipe the Slack app’s data, especially if you use the same password for other websites and apps.

According to a report by Android Police, a Slack representative confirmed that the password reset emails some Android users received were not phishing emails but were sent by the company. However, the issue seems to only affect a small percentage of Android users. If you are one of them, Slack may notify you via email to reset your password.

According to an email sent by Slack, the issue was discovered on January 20, 2021, and fixed on January 21, 2021. Slack urges users to change their passwords and create “complex and unique” passwords. If you receive an email, it will contain a link to redirect you to reset your password. To do this manually, go to your profile on Slack, click More > Account Settings.

We encourage Android users to update to the latest version of Slack from Google Play. Affected users are asked to wipe the data of their Android apps to delete the logs, where your login credentials are provided in plain text. While Slack says it has disabled logged passwords, users should especially delete logs from their phones if they have used the same password on other sites.

To do this, go to your phone’s set up and select app. Navigate to Slack (this may be in another app) and select clear storage or Clear data exist storage. Click OK Confirm that you want to permanently erase your data.
