Shenendehowa investigating coach over ‘racially sensitive incident’

The Shenendehowa Central School District’s athletic department is investigating what it calls a “racially sensitive incident” at the school that occurred Tuesday night between a coach and a student-athlete.

WRGB-6 first reported the investigation on Wednesday.

The school district sent a statement to students and parents Tuesday stating that the coach involved would not be allowed to have contact with the team until the investigation is complete, WRGB and WNYT-13 reported. The district said “necessary actions” will be taken once the findings of the investigation are complete. The school did not specify what sport the coach worked in or what level within the program the coach was at.

The district said in a statement that Shenandehowa athletic director Lucas LaBar is meeting with team members and their families. Counselors are available if needed.

“The district does not condone or tolerate discrimination of any kind,” the statement read.

“At Shen, the work of our school community is to be a place that celebrates diversity, prioritizes equity, and integrates inclusion into every aspect of the educational experience. We strive to create an environment where all individuals feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. Racist comments or actions are unacceptable and have no place in our community.

“We will investigate this matter thoroughly and take necessary actions in accordance with district policies and regulations. The athletic director is working with the team and their families to provide them with any support they may need. Counselors are also available for students. The coach will have no contact with the team while this matter is investigated.”

When contacted by The Times-Union on Wednesday night, LaBar said, “Unfortunately, I cannot reveal more than what is released in the statement. This is what the district has released at this time. Any other media inquiries will be directed to the district and the communications office.”
