Shane Steichen: Philip Rivers is excited to be back, “We’ll see” who starts on Sunday

Can Philip Rivers go from five years out of the NFL to starting Sunday? Colts head coach Sean Steichen hasn’t ruled out the possibility.

Steichen told reporters that quarterback Riley Leonard, who finished last week’s game after Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, will practice today despite the knee injury. But he did not say whether Leonard would start on Sunday, nor whether the 44-year-old Rivers, who had just joined the Colts, would start.

“We’ll see,” was all Steichen said of who will start Sunday’s game against the Seahawks.

Steichen sounded excited about the possibility of Rivers playing right away.

“His passion and obsession for the sport is unparalleled. For him to come back at 44 years old and want to do this, I think it’s unbelievable,” Steichen said. “We’re excited for his opportunity. He’s one of the most passionate players I’ve ever seen. The obsession with the game is off the charts. I know he’s excited to be back in the building.”

Even if Jones is healthy, the Colts will be at a disadvantage in Seattle. Without their starting quarterback, they were at a disadvantage by two touchdowns. Steichen knows he has to take some chances to pull off an upset and keep the team in contention for a playoff spot, and a high-risk, high-reward option with the 44-year-old Rivers might be his choice.
