GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – The off-ramp from westbound I-196 to southbound US-131 in Grand Rapids will be closed “indefinitely” after a semi-truck crash Tuesday, snarling traffic for hours.
The crash happened around 11 a.m. at the I-196 overpass on southbound US-131. According to Michigan State PoliceA semi-truck carrying approximately 140,000 pounds of pea gravel and sand was traveling south in the center lane of US-131 when the front end began to swerve to the left. Police said the driver tried to straighten the truck but went onto the ramp from westbound I-196. The truck flipped and hit a concrete wall. It is partially wedged under the ramp.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Police said it took about an hour to free the driver, who suffered only minor injuries. The driver was taken to hospital.
Initially, the left lane was blocked, Michigan Department of Transportation explain. Later, the highway was closed — and remains that way. Around 8:30 p.m., MSP Announce The ramp from westbound I-196 to southbound US-131 will be “closed indefinitely” until a comprehensive structural inspection is completed.
The city said the Grand Rapids Fire Department hazardous materials team had to clean up the diesel spill. MSP said the cleanup is also expected to take several hours.
