The secret is out.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton spoke at the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday night and confirmed that newly promoted offensive coordinator Davis Webb will call the shots during the 2026 NFL season.

Payton said Weber has talent and he only gave up play calling because he had confidence in the young coach. Payton said the decision was made to help the team.

Earlier in the day, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane spilled some beans during his own media conference, saying he believed Webb would handle play-calling duties in Denver. Webb, who spent four years as Buffalo’s backup quarterback, interviewed as the Bills’ head coach last month.

Payton has called plays throughout his entire 18-season career as a head coach, but he admitted last season that he wasn’t calling plays fast enough as he got older. Last summer, Payton, 62, allowed Weber, 31, to call a game in a preseason game. After that exhibition game, Payton praised Webb’s quick, efficient play-calling.

During his four years in Denver, Webb quickly rose from quarterbacks coach to offensive passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator, and he was widely expected to eventually become an NFL head coach. After attracting interest from multiple clubs this offseason, Weber decided to stay with the Broncos following his promotion. His new OC title will officially include game calling responsibilities.
