Entering the final week of the regular season, the Denver Broncos (13-3) have tied for the best record in the NFL and are currently the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs.
Overall, the Broncos are a balanced team with the fourth-highest scoring defense in the NFL and the seventh-highest scoring offense in the AFC. If there’s one area where coach Sean Payton’s team has dominated, it’s takeaways.

The Denver Nuggets rank 25th in the league in turnover margin at -5. That number will have to improve if the Broncos want to make a deep run in the NFL playoffs.
“One area that has to improve is the turnover rate, which could happen,” Payton said. “We did a rundown of Super Bowl champions over the past 25 years. There’s about 114-plus. There’s been one Super Bowl champion over the past 25 years. [in the negative] –I’m just talking about when the playoffs start, if that makes sense. When the postseason begins, the Rams are the only team with a minus-two turnover margin as of late. The rest adds up to a crazy number, so that’s something we have to improve on. “
Denver has 17 turnovers (11 interceptions and six fumbles) this season, ranking 13th. Even more concerning is the fact that there were only 12 takeaways (nine interceptions and three fumbles), fifth-most in the NFL. In addition to protecting the football, the Broncos also need to force takeaways. If they don’t, their chances of seeking a fourth Super Bowl title will be slim.
