Sean McVay on whether he expects Matthew Stafford back: “What the hell kind of question is that?”

Rams head coach Sean McVay was asked direct questions about his quarterback following Sunday’s NFC Championship Game loss to the Seahawks.

“Do you expect Matthew Stafford to be back next season?”

“I mean, if he still wants to play,” McVay said. “What’s the problem?”

He looked more incredulous than frustrated at the question. McVeigh then became pragmatic.

“You have to ask him,” McVay said. “We’re always there. I know he’s still going to play really well if he wants to. I mean, he’s the MVP of the league and if he’s not – you know, I mean, I get respect from other guys, but this guy plays at a completely different level.”

Stafford, who turns 38 next month, was asked individually if he would return. He didn’t say no. He didn’t say yes either.

“I can’t sum up six months of my life in ten minutes after losing a loved one,” Stafford said.

Stafford will be paid $40 million next year, the final season of his current contract. The Rams and Stafford have been operating on a year-to-year schedule; if the two sides decide to re-sign for another year, he’s certain to get a significant raise.

Last year, things got dangerous. Stafford received clearance to explore a trade. He ultimately decided to stay put and get more from the Rams, but not as much as he could have gotten elsewhere.

This year, they may dance again. The challenge is convincing teams that he’s serious about leaving, and that it’s not just about getting the best deal from the Rams in 2026 and beyond.
