  • The installation comes on the heels of another notable Bitcoin moment.

A sculpture commemorating Bitcoin’s enigmatic founder Satoshi Nakamoto has been unveiled at the New York Stock Exchange, in one of the most prominent recognitions of the cryptocurrency space yet by a major U.S. financial institution.

The piece, created by Italian artist Valentina Picozzi, was installed this week as part of her global project dedicated to honoring Bitcoin’s anonymous inventor.

The New York Stock Exchange piece is the sixth in a planned series of 21 sculptures, echoing Bitcoin’s supply cap of 21 million coins.

Picozzi said placing the artwork within the historic exchange was an unexpected milestone for the initiative.

The installation is backed by Twenty One Capital, a Tether-backed Bitcoin vault led by Strike founder Jack Mallers.

Officials at the exchange described the statue as a symbolic meeting point between traditional markets and emerging digital asset systems.

“From code to culture, this layout represents an artistic reflection on how new ideas can become part of a shared history,” NYSE wrote on X.

Its debut coincides with the anniversary of the Bitcoin developer mailing list launched by Satoshi Nakamoto on December 10, 2008.

“What an achievement,” Picozzi wrote, “even in our wildest dreams we would not have considered placing a statue of Satoshi Nakamoto in this location!”

The Satoshigallery project was launched in 2020 to document Bitcoin’s cultural and technological story through public artwork.

Early statues have been installed in Miami, El Salvador, Vietnam and Japan.

The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains Bitcoin’s biggest mystery, with countless theories and ideas about who he might be.

Satoshi Nakamoto has not been heard from since his disappearance on April 23, 2011.

In October, HBO released a documentary directed by Cullen Hoback, taking the filmmaker around the world to learn about the origins of Bitcoin and its creator.

Although the documentary generated widespread interest, none of the theories proposed have been confirmed.

The statue’s appearance at the New York Stock Exchange follows another mainstream event for Bitcoin: an entire billboard dedicated to Bitcoin in the middle of Times Square.

It’s also an ad for Twenty One Capital, with the billboard reading: “No one should work for something another person can print.”
