San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb will start WBC opener for Team USA against Brazil

PHOENIX (AP) — San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb will start on the mound for Team USA in Friday night’s first World Baseball Classic against Brazil, manager Mark DeRosa said Monday.

DeRosa added that two-time American League Young Award winner Tarik Skubal is expected to start Saturday against UK, followed by National League Young Award winner Paul Skenes against Mexico on Monday.

New York Mets right-hander Nolan McLean is tentatively scheduled to start Tuesday’s final pool game against Italy, although he is dealing with an illness and did not participate in Monday’s practice with Team USA.

“It’s been arranged,” said DeRosa. “Obviously, there are guardrails at the start of the game, in terms of the number of games, but there are also guardrails where players have to be ready for their team’s opening day on certain days.”

Team USA will play two exhibition games in Arizona on Tuesday and Wednesday before traveling to Houston for its WBC opener against Brazil. Skenes will start Tuesday against the Giants. DeRosa said Matthew Boyd, Gabe Spear, David Bednar, Griffin Jaquez and Mason Miller will also take the mound.

Skubal is expected to make just one start for Team USA before rejoining the Detroit Tigers for the remainder of spring training.
