More information about the NCAA Transfer Portal, 2025-26 updated rules

Meanwhile, the NCAA Division I Governing Council approved a one-time college football transfer portal date back in early October. Currently, the 2025-26 college football transfer portal will last 15 days. The NCAA announced that the tournament will be held from January 2 to January 16.

Looking ahead, notifications for the entire first-tier football transfer window are scheduled to take place from January 2 to 16. Under previous standards, athletes on College Football Playoff teams still in play would have five days to enter the transfer portal starting the day after their team’s last game.

Additionally, players had 15 days to enter the portal, but they entered without committing to the deadline. Traditionally, the commitment deadline is the latest time a school can recruit a player through recruiting.

It is important to note that if a head coach is fired, the transfer portal will not immediately open to players. The NCAA revealed that going forward, players will only have 15 days to enter the portal after a coaching change, instead of the previously allotted 30 days. Players must also wait five days after a new coach is hired or announced.

Finally, graduate transfers will also have until January 2 to access the transfer portal through a new one-time portal window. All of these new guidelines are bound to bring changes, but the transfer portal will remain as fun and interesting as ever.
