Newcastle United took a decisive step towards the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 3-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven at a vibrant St James’ Park.

The breakthrough came within eight minutes. PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar’s loose clearance was passed directly to Bruno Guimaraes, whose sharp pass released Joelinton. The midfielder selflessly set up for Ioane Visa, who showed real composure to slot the ball past Kovar and into the net. It was another significant moment in the beginning of Visa’s impressive life on Tyneside.

Newcastle continued to press aggressively, disrupting the PSV defence, and the second goal was a direct result of this pressure. Defender Jarek Gasiorowski’s powerful touch was caught by Visa and the ball slid across the goal for Anthony Gordon to score unmarked. Gordon’s achievement tied Alan Shearer’s club record of six goals in a single Champions League season.

The only blemish on an excellent first half was Newcastle captain Guimarães being forced off with an ankle injury, a moment that briefly lightened the mood inside the stadium.

Midway through the second half, any lingering nerves were lifted. PSV captain Jeddy Schouten failed to convert a promising ball into the penalty area and Harvey Barnes reacted fastest, calmly firing in from close range to make it 3-0.

From that point on, Newcastle managed the game maturely, conserving energy while limiting PSV’s performance. The result moves Eddie Howe’s side up to seventh in the league stage and, crucially, secures at least a place in the last 16 play-offs.

With momentum building under Eddie Howe, Newcastle will now travel to face defending champions Paris Saint-Germain knowing that a statement result in Paris could see them automatically qualify for the knockout stages.

It was a trying night for PSV. Mistakes in possession and ruthless punishment have seen them slip to 22nd in the table and face the daunting task of extending their European schedule.
