There was clearly some tension between Montgomery and the Lions after the 2025 season, with Montgomery’s usage declining as Jameer Gibbs emerged. Just last week, Lions general manager Brad Holmes said talks between the Lions and Montgomery were ongoing.

“Obviously, look, we love David. He’s a great player. We’d love to have him. Kind of want to put last year behind us and move forward. But players have to want to get to a certain position, too, so those conversations are still fluid and we’ll just see how things go,” Holmes said last week.

With this move, the Lions will free up more than $3.5 million in cap space, but now they have a big need at the secondary running back position.
