Bayern Munich have been in talks with Dayot Upamecano’s camp for months, but both sides have been deadlocked and unwilling to take action.
Eventually, something has to give.
It turns out Bayern Munich are loosening their grip on what Bild wants (captured by @iMiaSanMia). Bayern Munich will reportedly give in to Upamecano’s demands and activate his release clause in 2027:
Bayern Munich are considering making concessions to Dayot Upamecano in order to finally reach an agreement on a contract extension. The club and player have agreed in principle on financial terms, but the sticking point so far has been the release clause. Upamecano’s camp is demanding a release clause worth around €65 million. The main disagreement is over when the option takes effect.
Player representatives insist that the release clause will be effective as early as the first year after the extension (2027). Bayern, on the other hand, have so far insisted that the option only becomes available after one year. Bayern are now considering granting Upamecano’s wish to have his release clause take effect in 2027 in order to finalize a new contract. With competition from clubs such as Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern management may not only need to make attractive sporting and financial offers, but also be willing to compromise on further terms of the contract. Such a clause would allow Bayern to keep Upamecano for at least another year and still receive €65 million should he leave. Without this concession, the deal may fall through.

BFW analysis
It would be a shock and a departure from Bayern Munich’s normal operating procedures. A release clause activated in 2027 for €65 million could set a bad precedent for subsequent negotiations, especially given that the club now appears to be able to produce legitimate professionals from its academy.
Is Upamecano worth the trouble this will ultimately cause? Bavarians must think so, because business is about to change dramatically.
