Replay ruling got Cam Jordan a sack, and a $600,000 bonus

Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan has a clause in his contract that will give him a $600,000 bonus if he has at least nine sacks this season. Heading into Sunday’s game against the Titans, he had 8.5 sacks on the season. That made the replay ruling late in the fourth quarter very lucrative for Jordan.

The Titans faced fourth-and-10 with 2:09 left in the fourth quarter, and Titans quarterback Cam Ward made a play that at first glance looked like a highlight: When Jordan dove at Ward’s feet and knocked him to the ground, Ward threw the ball to teammate Tyjae Spears, who ran for the first score.

Unfortunately for Ward, a replay assistant reviewed the play and determined that Ward’s knee made contact with the ground for a split second before passing the ball to Spears. It was the correct call, but it overturned a great performance by Ward.

Luckily for Jordan, it counted as a sack. If it wasn’t the biggest sack of his career, it was one of his most profitable in a game between two teams long out of playoff contention.
