As The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey noted, Boston chose to move forward without Nate Eaton, Mickey Gasper or Matt Theis.
Eaton was the biggest surprise, as his infield/outfield versatility was expected to help him fill the final spot on the bench. Gaspar and Theis had a chance, albeit a slim chance, to return to the roster due to their catching ability, but were passed up because of a familiar face — with the roster now taking center stage as the club prepares for Opening Day against the Cincinnati Reds.

Wong, 29, didn’t have the best spring training, slashing .074/.194/.268 in 12 games in the Grapefruit League. However, Boston appears to value his familiarity and comfort level with the pitching staff and will keep him around for a sixth season as they likely continue to try to upgrade the position.
The 28-year-old Monasterio eventually made the roster thanks to his defensive versatility — he played at first base, second base, third base and shortstop while slashing .300/.383/.425 in the Grapefruit League.
The Red Sox will maintain a solid rotation in the outfield and at designated hitter, utilizing the likes of Anthony, Rafaela, Abreu, Duran and Yoshida.
