(Colorado Springs) – A FOX21 News viewer shared photos after seeing a rare black fox wandering the neighborhood near Barnes Road and Oro Blanco Drive on Sunday, March 8.

In the photo, a striking black fox with a white-tipped tail wanders along the road between houses. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the fox is technically a red fox and has a fairly rare genetic mutation that gives it black fur. FOX21 News viewer Kamrine said the fox was discovered around 8 a.m. Sunday.

Foxes are commonly found in open woodlands and pastures, but they can survive well in urban areas, and they are most active at dawn or dusk, according to CPW. They often have multiple nests, often using holes abandoned by other animals or recesses under buildings.

CPW notes that while feeding foxes may be done with good intentions, it can end up harming them and recommends keeping small pets indoors in areas where foxes are known.
