Raiders secure No. 1 overall pick in NFL draft after Giants’ win over Cowboys

The Las Vegas Raiders will have the No. 1 pick in this year’s NFL draft after the New York Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys 34-17 on Sunday.

The Giants’ victory ensures the Raiders have the worst record at 2-14 heading into Sunday’s home game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

If the Giants (4-13) lose to Dallas, Las Vegas has to lose to the Chiefs to get the No. 1 pick. New York’s win makes this outcome irrelevant to the Raiders as it relates to the draft.

This is only the second time the Raiders have had the No. 1 pick. In 2007, the then-Oakland Raiders selected quarterback JaMarcus Russell with the No. 1 overall pick out of Louisiana State University. He became one of the team’s top draft picks.

The Raiders could take a chance on another quarterback this year, selecting either Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza of Indiana or Oregon’s Dante Moore.
