Raheem Mostert says Mike McDaniel was too much of a players’ coach for his own good

Raheem Mostert played for McDaniel for five seasons when McDaniel was an assistant coach in San Francisco and then for three seasons when McDaniel was the head coach at Miami. Few players have spent as much time with McDaniel as Mostert. Mostert said McDaniel’s failure as a head coach was that he tried too hard to be a player’s coach.

“He’s a great coach,” Mostert said. “If the players are talking, he’s going to listen and give them some advice, but head coach wise – it’s been a little rough with what they’ve been through the last few years. I feel a little bad for the players. When you have a coach that’s so player-friendly, it doesn’t really mix that well. Look at coaches historically, not just in the NFL but in all these different sports franchises, they’ve had coaches who implemented toughness and toughness, and that’s the goal that he kind of missed as a head coach.”

Mostert called McDaniel “nonchalant,” “laid-back” and a “players’ coach,” and said players respond better to a head coach whose attitude is “we’re getting the job done, it’s my way or the highway.”

Ultimately, Mostert said, the Dolphins need a coach who can hold them to a higher standard.

“As a player, I need someone who is strong and puts the hammer down when the hammer needs to come down and tells the other players to fall in line,” Mostert said. “If not, the impact would certainly be detrimental.”
