Professional racing drivers Kelly Marie Walton and Jenny Lee are both recovering weeks after being seriously injured when their vehicle caught fire during a live event.

In a joint Instagram post on March 26, Lee’s husband Eric made a video to combat “bad information from the outside world” and confirmed that the co-pilot was involved in an accident at around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 24, during the preliminaries of the San Felipe 250 near San Felipe, Baja California.

“The car caught fire under Jenny’s seat, but her seatbelt was not unbuckled,” he said, beginning to break down and cry. “At that point, she was completely engulfed in flames.”

He added that despite the chaotic situation, Kelly helped Jenny unbuckle her seatbelt and “saved her life.”

Eric also praised the women’s helmets, gloves and other protective gear for preventing the situation from getting worse. Still, Lee suffered “extensive” burns to his legs and shoulders, “which will require some transplant surgery.”

“She’s a trooper and has great spirits,” Eric said of his wife.

Walton said in the video that her hands were also burned. “The girls are strong,” he continued. “They are.”

Eric became emotional again and thanked everyone present for “getting the girls out of there real quick.”

His video is one of nearly a dozen updates he, Lee and Walton have shared.

On April 9, Road 2 Recovery, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for professionally licensed athletes suffering career-ending injuries, said in an Instagram update: “ [Lee and Walton] The recovery process after a burn injury is long and challenging, requiring ongoing medical care, patience, and resilience. “

The post also included a photo of Li lying in a hospital bed, one of her legs almost covered in bandages. The photo below shows Walton resting at home with his hands wrapped in gauze.

By April 14, Li had been in the burn unit intensive care unit for 20 days.

Walton also kept her supporters informed of her situation.

“I just wanted to take a moment to check in and thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued prayers, messages and support,” she wrote in an April 20 Instagram video. “This truly means a lot to me, more than I can ever explain.”

The video shows her being helped, the bandage changed and the wound disinfected.

“I had a doctor’s appointment last week and saw Jenny there. It was huge to get her checked out and see how she was recovering,” Walton wrote, adding that she would provide another update later this week.

Lee told her followers on Wednesday, April 22, that with the help of a nurse, she was finally able to start walking again.

“As the days go by, getting out of bed becomes easier and easier and I no longer need extra rescue painkillers to do it. God bless!” she wrote, along with a video showing her progress.

Lee added that she was working on introducing movement and “coordinated foot training” without a walker after multiple surgeries.

“Hospital hopscotch is hard my girl 🙌😮‍💨 I love you and I’m so proud of you 👏🏼 Keep it up,” Walton commented.
