Incentives include classroom success for football student-athletes, a win over Bethune-Cookman in the Florida Classic and postseason success such as winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship and the Celebration Bowl.

The contract will be presented to the FAMU Board of Trustees for approval at a special meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 9 a.m., open to the public via Zoom.

Gray, the FAMU record-setter and Hall of Fame quarterback, will return as head coach of the Diamondbacks after three years coaching NCAA Division II Albany State.

He will replace former FAMU football coach James Colzie III, who was relieved of his duties on Dec. 8 after going 12-12 in two seasons, including 5-7 in 2025, the Diamondbacks’ first losing season since 2017.

Gray played for the Diamondbacks under head coach Billy Joe from 1997 to 2001 before beginning a six-year career in the National Football League, primarily as the backup quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
