Searcy, Ark. — President George W. Bush reflected on his tenure, the importance of democratic institutions and the role young Americans play in shaping the nation’s future Wednesday night at Harding University.
The former president’s address, titled “The Challenges Facing Our Nation and the Power of Freedom in the 21st Century,” was part of a yearlong Distinguished Lecture Series celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
President Bush shared his experiences in times of crisis and hope, emphasizing the importance of caring for each other and our country.

Bush also encouraged students, faculty, alumni, community members, and local and state leaders to commit themselves to learning and broadening their worldviews.
Bush said: “Democracy has the ability to repair itself.” He is confident that the country will continue to progress and persevere.
“It is a great honor to host President George W. Bush on our campus,” said Harding University President Dr. Mike Williams. “Moments like this provide our students with a unique opportunity to hear directly from the voices of leaders who have served our country at the highest levels. We are grateful for his willingness to share his experiences and encourage our students to pursue lives of leadership, integrity and service to others.”

The event continues a more than seventy-year tradition of promoting a deeper understanding of the Constitution, capitalism and free enterprise, and the intersection of faith and civic life, according to the university. The Distinguished Lecture Series brings together presidents, heads of state, business leaders, academics and thought leaders.
