Police conclude two-year investigation into suspicious hunting group, charge them over $48,000

In October 2023, a routine traffic stop in southern Idaho sparked one of the state’s largest wildlife crime investigations in recent years.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game reports that after a two-year investigation, 17 of the 19 alleged participants in an illegal hunting ring have been brought to justice. In total, the gang illegally killed 35 animals, mostly black-tailed deer, but also took a bull moose, a swan and a bobcat since 2016.

The crimes occurred at the Twin Falls County Game Control Unit 54. For legal hunters, obtaining a license for a mature buck is very popular as only 300 tags are allowed per year.

Prosecuted poachers choose to circumvent legal avenues and compound their crimes by discarding the meat of their prey. Wasting game meat is a crime that carries civil penalties and may result in jail time. Seven of the most serious offenders were sentenced to jail time, prohibited from hunting, and the remaining 10 were given suspended sentences and fines totaling $48,631.

This story is a powerful reminder of how important it is to fully enforce conservation laws. “This result reinforces our commitment to holding violators accountable and protecting Idaho’s wildlife heritage,” said Clint Rogers, Idaho Fish and Game Conservation Officer.

If hunted ethically and responsibly, it can help control animal populations and prevent overpopulation and overgrazing. License revenue is an important source of funding for agencies that manage and protect habitats.

However, these efforts are undermined by the actions of irresponsible individuals. Unfortunately, it is all too common for selfish individuals to ruin the enjoyment of others’ outdoor activities, and illegal hunting wreaks havoc on wildlife management.

In a social media post about the story by hunting channel Venatic Media, viewers expressed their disgust at the nature of the crime.

Some people think this sentence is too light: “How can these people not be legally imprisoned. Not 20 years, but 2-5 years.”

Another was disgusted by the waste: “I wish the penalties were harsher. For hunters, meat should always be the first priority.”
