Local police say they have charged an Illinois driver who struck and killed a pedestrian while live streaming on TikTok.
The New York Times reported that Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, who posted on TikTok under the name Tea Tyme, was charged by the Zion Police Department with two felonies – reckless homicide and aggravated use of a communication device resulting in death.
According to reports, in a video shared by other accounts on TikTok, a woman who posts under the name Tea Tyme can be seen talking into her phone as it makes a loud noise. A child off-screen asks: “What was that?” and the woman replies: “I hit someone.”

Surveillance video reportedly showed McCarty-Wharton’s vehicle entering the intersection while the traffic light was still red, and investigators determined she did not appear to slow down or change course before striking Darren Lucas, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
McCarty-Wroten’s attorney told The New York Times that evidence will show “what happened was an accident and an act of negligence, but not intentional or reckless conduct.”
