Philip Rivers could become the third-oldest starting quarterback in NFL history

The day after my 44th birthday, Philip Rivers signs with Colts practice squad today. Whether he starts for the Colts this season remains to be seen, but if he does, he could become the third-oldest starting quarterback in NFL history.

The oldest starting quarterback ever is Tom Brady, who was 45 years and 166 days old when he started the last game of his NFL career (the Buccaneers’ playoff loss to the Cowboys in January 2023).

The second-oldest starting quarterback in history is Steve DeBerg, who started the final game of his career for the Falcons in 1998 at 44 years and 279 days.

The third-oldest starting quarterback in history is Vinny Testaverde, who was 44 years and 26 days old when he started his last game for the Panthers in 2007.

On the last day of the regular season, Rivers was 44 years and 27 days old. So if he starts for the Colts that day, he’ll surpass Testaverde as the third-oldest quarterback in NFL history.
