People lined the streets Sunday morning for South Boston’s biggest event. The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade draws hundreds of thousands of people to the area to celebrate Irish culture.
“I live in Andrew Square and when it starts in the best part of town, how can you not be here,” Patty Martin said. “Everyone comes here to have a good time. Being from Boston, everyone is very proud.”
Martin grew up in South Boston and has not missed a parade in two decades. Her friend Nikki Bandera also lives in South West.
“A lot of great memories, a lot of firsts,” Bandera said. “It’s a great day where the whole community comes together to celebrate who we are as Bostonians. Today we are all Irish.”
Boston 25 News reporter Michael Raimondi interviewed many people across the state. A woman rides the commuter rail from Sharon.
“It’s important, but worth it,” she said.
Others came from across the country and as far away as Texas.
“I think it’s really cool and super fun,” said a woman from Wisconsin.
“Boston does a really good job with this,” said one Philadelphia resident.
The parade features music, dance and bands. Everyone can feel the excitement and see the sea of green.
For parents, the parade is an event to share core memories with their children.
“Tradition is very important, especially in a city like Boston. Our job is to represent that and keep it alive because it doesn’t exist anywhere else,” Bandera said.
