With Manchester United out of the FA Cup and without a game this weekend, Paul Scholes has taken the opportunity to give his former club a try.

Fletcher’s side couldn’t beat Brighton at Old Trafford. Benjamin Sesko scored but it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.

Shay Lacey was sent off in that game and has not made a first-team appearance since, despite impressing when given the chance. Now, with United out until 2027, the region’s attention turns to another fixture closer to home.

Failure to qualify for the FA Cup would be a setback for United, especially as Michael Carrick could have guided them to a win that would have given them another chance at the trophy.

On the other hand, it also gives the team time to fully focus on ensuring Champions League qualification and spend an important two weeks on the training ground.

Paul Scholes took to Salford City’s TikTok and downplayed Manchester United’s absence from the game in a way that also referenced his own club.

“Last year was the first time we reached the third round of the cup. To go from where we were 10 years ago to now is fantastic. We have to enjoy it and this season we are even further than Manchester United in the FA Cup.”

This comes ahead of Salford’s clash with Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

Manchester United cannot afford another cup-less season

There are only 12 games left this season, and both domestic cup competitions have been eliminated early, creating a strange reality.

In addition to the FA Cup defeat to Brighton, Manchester United’s loss to Grimsby in the League Cup was particularly serious, which could easily cost Amorim his job.

This can’t happen again next year.

United need to contend deeply in both competitions. The extra games not only provide valuable rotation options, but also provide more opportunities for young players to play meaningful minutes.

With European football looking likely – and possibly even a return to the Champions League – a congested schedule will no longer be an excuse.
