Patriots Targeting $100 Million Former No. 1 Pick Is No-Brainer

The post Patriots targeting $100 million for former No. 1 draft pick is a no-brainer originally appeared on NESN. Click here to add NESN as your preferred source.

The New England Patriots have a lot of positions to address in free agency: edge, wide receiver, offensive line, linebacker, tight end.

Checking all those boxes isn’t easy, though…

If the club is going to put itself in a position to compete regularly, it’s going to have to put together another near-perfect offseason — which might ultimately mean raising some money to sign former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Jadeveon Clowney.

Let’s take a look!

Introduction:

Jadeveon Clowney
Location: edge
high: 6’5″
weight: 266 pounds
Age in 2026: 33 (February 14, 1993)
2025: 13kg, 8.5 sacks, 10 QB hits, 12 TDs

The Patriots should sign Jadeveon Clowney because:

It’s a proven formula…

Clowney, the former No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL draft, started a small tradition of signing short-term contracts with teams that allowed him to come in and specifically try to kill quarterbacks, which earned him more than $100 million in one year with the Baltimore Ravens, Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans.

Mike Vrabel, Terrell Williams, Zach Kuhl, Scott Booker, Justin Hamilton and Clint McMillan make up nearly all of New England’s defensive staff who worked with him during his time at Tennessee — and they may want a chance to avenge the unfortunate partnership. Clowney has never been a double-digit sack guy, but he did have 8.5, 9.5 and 9.0 sack seasons since his only no-sack season with the staff in 2020.

I don’t know if this is a coincidence, but why not seek to repair the relationship?

The Patriots should no Jadeveon Clowney was signed because:

If you do, it means you have failed in your pursuit of other change makers…

The Patriots just need more guys to add to this position group, so while it’s interesting to consider bringing in a hire, the only way it makes sense is if they have some extra money at the end of training camp and want to really push the pass rush over the top.

Best for:

1. Dallas Cowboys
2. Philadelphia Eagles
3. Cincinnati Bengals

I don’t think this makes sense, but isn’t it interesting?
