New England Patriots safety Jaylin Hawkins’ future with the team remains up in the air, but his feelings for quarterback Derek Meyer haven’t changed.
When asked about Meyer, the soon-to-be free agent linebacker had glowing reviews of the 23-year-old quarterback.

“He’s a true leader. You can see it. He comes in with an attitude, real confidence,” Hawkins said. RGIII Outta Pocket. “Then he just goes out there and plays. Just plays, plays. I don’t think he’s really worried about what other people think of him. He’s really comfortable with it. The thing is, every time adversity hits, you can see him persevere, like you can see him. Obviously, he’s a vocal leader. All-around, man, he’s a great player.”
Meyer threw for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns and eight interceptions on the year, and he led the NFL with a 72% completion rate. With Meyer under center, the Patriots went 14-3 in the 2025 season and reached the Super Bowl.
That second-year leap is everything the Patriots could have hoped for in Meyer. If anyone knows about this growth, it’s Hawkins, who has had a front-row seat since the team drafted him No. 3 overall in 2024.
