PATH sets plans to modernize its fare gate system

NEW YORK (PIX11) – PATH’s current fare gate system is more than 20 years old and plans are underway to find a replacement, the Port Authority announced Thursday.

The agency has set aside $3.5 million for a planning process to replace 341 standard, ADA-compliant fare gates at 13 stations.

“The old fare gates have reached the end of their useful life,” said Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia. “The new equipment will provide us with the tools to effectively tackle fare evasion, meet the different needs of passengers, and be fully integrated with our new TAPP contactless payment system.”

According to the Port Authority, more than 75% of daily passengers use the TAPP payment system since its implementation in 2023.

“This investment demonstrates our commitment to PATH built on upgraded infrastructure, improved stations and seamless technology,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole.

The planning process is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026 and continue through the second quarter of 2027.

In February, the MTA began replacing its own fare gate systems and plans to add them to 150 stations.
