Panthers S Lathan Ransom explains what he was thinking on costly penalty in loss to Saints

The Carolina Panthers were awarded 11 penalties in Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints. But arguably no flag is more damaging than the one drawn by the rookie linebacker.

Safety Lathan Ransom, one game shy of the best performance of his young career, suffered a big mental lapse toward the end of a brutal game. With 12 seconds left and the game tied, Ransom threw himself down in an attempt to stop New Orleans quarterback Tyler Shough, who was running and sliding.

Ransom was called for an unnecessary roughing penalty on Shaugh, which gave the Saints 15 more yards. The foul set up kicker Charlie Smyth’s 47-yard field goal to take the lead and hand Carolina the upset.

He was also asked what he thought he could have done differently. . .

If the Panthers win, they’ll be one win away from their first NFC South title since 2015.
