Palm Springs airport still seeing flight cancelations, delays Sunday

Flights continue to be affected by the Federal Aviation Administration’s Palm Springs International Airport ground shutdown, which began on the morning of Saturday, January 3 and ended that afternoon.

As of Sunday morning, the PSP flight tracker showed about half of 16 scheduled flights had been delayed or canceled.

“Departures and arrivals will begin to slowly resume, but delays are expected to continue as operations normalize,” a statement on the airport’s website said. “Passengers should continue to monitor flight status directly with airlines.”

Several bags were stranded at Palm Springs International Airport on Saturday, January 3, after all flights were stopped.

Saturday’s ground shutdown lasted several hours, during which few flights were able to fly in or out of the airport. The disruption occurred during a busy New Year’s travel weekend and the second day of the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

An airport said in a statement posted on social media that flights were grounded due to an air traffic control issue affecting Southern California airspace.

The problem is not unique to Palm Springs, the statement said. However, there has been little other news coverage of air travel issues elsewhere in the state.

Some flights to Palm Springs were diverted to other airports, while other flights scheduled for Saturday were canceled.

The airport encourages travelers to check with their airlines for the latest information on flight status.
