The studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man game on the PlayStation pitched Resistance 4 to Sony but was rejected, the founder of Insomniac Games revealed over the weekend. Insomniac, known for its iconic franchises like Ratchet & Clank and Spyro, has produced three Resistance games on the PlayStation 3. However, there hasn’t been a new entry in the first-person shooter series since 2011’s Resistance 3.
Insomnia Treble Resistance 4
Insomniac Games founder and CEO Ted Price revealed on the Kindaunny Gamescast on Saturday that the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart developer had pitched the idea for a fourth Resistance game to parent company Sony, but the project wasn’t approved.
“We did propose it,” Price said of potential Resistance 4, “and it was a great concept. But in terms of timing and market opportunity, it just didn’t pan out.”
“This was the result of a lot of Insomniac team members being keen to expand the story further, because I do believe the Resistance has set up a really cool alternate history base where anything could have happened to the Chimera, where they went, what their origins were. We spent a lot of time working on the backstory and brainstorming what avenues we could take in the future,” Price said.
Price’s comments come after he announced in January that he would retire from the gaming industry at the end of March.
The Insomniac CEO, who previously served as creative director on Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, further stated that he would like to see Resistance’s story developed further, but that the studio has no current plans to do so. “We love the fan response, and we know fans often ask us if we’re going to do Resistance again. There’s no answer to that question, but I will say we launched Resistance 4, which is pretty cool,” he said.
However, Price didn’t rule out the possibility of Insomniac, which is currently working on Marvel’s Wolverine, returning to the Resistance at some point. “Fortunately, because we’re part of Sony and Sony owns the intellectual property for Resistance, we’ll always have the opportunity to revisit Resistance.”
The “Resistance” series is set in an alternate history in the 1950s, where the earth was invaded by a hostile alien race. Three mainline games were launched on PS3 between 2006 and 2011. Since then, Insomniac Games has developed more Ratchet & Clank games, Sunset Run, and Marvel’s Spider-Man games.
Price, who founded Insomniac Games in 1994, announced his retirement last month, saying that after leading the studio for 30 years, he felt it was time to step down. Price confirmed that Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider and Jen Huang will be appointed as Insomniac’s new co-studio heads.
