Only 19 women’s NCAA tournament brackets are still perfect after Minnesota rallies to beat Ole Miss

Well, we’re almost done on the women’s side as well.

On Sunday, three games into the second round of the NCAA women’s tournament, only 19 of the 19 perfect brackets filled out by Yahoo Sports users remained. That’s down from the 55 teams that survived the first round.

While Michigan State’s win over North Carolina and NC State’s win over Maryland eliminated some teams, the biggest boost in Sunday’s early game came from Minneapolis. Trailing by eight points in the fourth quarter, Minnesota knocked down Ole Miss with the game-winning field goal with 0.8 seconds left. Amaya Battle’s shot from a short corner sparked a huge celebration at home.

That puts the Gophers in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2005.

As a result of this win, 15 other groups were eliminated. This brings the count to 19.

After a slow start on Friday, the rankings began to slide rapidly in the second half of Saturday’s first round. Virginia’s victory over Georgia caused the most damage, with its approval rating falling from 29% to just 0.7%. By the end of the night, only 55 teams remained undefeated.

The men’s team also lost all of its perfect brackets on Saturday. After only six players entered the second round to start, Texas managed to eliminate the rest with an upset victory over No. 3 Gonzaga.

While a handful of brackets are still perfect, they are falling very quickly on Sunday. At this rate, we’ll be lucky to see anyone make it to Monday, let alone the second weekend of the tournament.
