One person dead following raging overnight in Oakham

One person has died after a fire broke out at a home in Oakham shortly after midnight on Wednesday.

The fire broke out at a home on Skyline Drive around 12:45 a.m., according to the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.

When fire crews arrived, a Rutland police officer attempted to enter the home despite billowing smoke and flames, but was forced back outside due to the conditions.

With temperatures hovering in the low single digits and water pipes freezing, firefighters were forced to call water trucks to the scene to keep watering.

When the fire was brought under control, crews determined that the only adult resident had died.

“Our hearts go out to the families who lost their loved ones this morning,” said Oakham Fire Chief Timothy Howe. “This is a sad day for them and the community.”

The origin and cause of the fire are being investigated by the Oakham Fire Department, Oakham Police Department, state police fire investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and state police detectives with the Worcester District Attorney’s Office.
