One mistake cost Chelsea a win on Saturday – and this player keeps making them

Chelsea lost to Aston Villa yesterday despite the Blues dominating the match for 65 minutes.

They haven’t quite achieved the second goal they need, but it’s coming. It wasn’t until Benoit Badiashile passed the ball to an opposing player with minimal pressure that Villa swooped in and scored.

Of course, it’s not just about conceding a goal, but the team was so confident before conceding the goal and so bad after conceding it that, to some extent, it’s impossible not to look at it in those terms. While all of the targets can be pinned on multiple individuals, this was a clear moment of Buddy Ashler’s brain freeze, and it’s equally difficult to pin the blame elsewhere.

Sadly for the Frenchman, we’ve seen him make this mistake multiple times. No matter how well he plays, those mistakes always seem to be just around the corner. It is better for a centre-back to have a reliable 7/10 than to have a player who is sometimes a number 8 and sometimes a number 5.

Badyashler has been with us for a few years now and this inconsistency doesn’t look like it’s going away. Of course, scoring more goals would have guaranteed us the three points – but we were ahead and just needed to hold on to it.

In other news…

Enzo Maresca’s future has been subject to some doubts ever since he made his comments about Chelsea’s lack of support, and recent results don’t make things any more stable. One pundit speculates he is gearing up for a job at Manchester City next summer.

James McCarty is another talent Chelsea are clearly keeping an eye on and despite his poor form this season, we could see the Blues making this move given their current transfer pattern.
