Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss plans to return, pending NCAA ruling on eligibility

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Mississippi quarterback Trinidad Chambliss plans to return to school next season if the NCAA approves his request for a one-year extension of eligibility.

Chambliss announced his decision on social media on Monday, three days before the Rebels play Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.

“This season has meant so much to me, especially because of the brothers I meet every day and the unwavering support of the Oxford community,” Chambliss wrote. “My teammates are family and we share a common goal, which is to bring a championship to the University of Mississippi. While the process is still ongoing, the place I want to be the most is to finish my college football career in Oxford.”

Chambliss redshirted his first season at Ferris State and redshirted his second season due to health reasons. Ole Miss submitted a waiver request to the NCAA in November.

Chambliss took a detour to Ole Miss and led Ferris State to a Division II national championship after not receiving a Division I offer out of high school. He took over as the Rebels’ starter after Austin Simmons suffered an ankle injury in his second game of the season and performed well.

The dual-threat quarterback threw for 353 yards in his first start against Arkansas and performed so well that he retained the starting job after Simmons returned to health.

Chambliss led the sixth-seeded Rebels with 3,660 yards and 21 touchdowns against just three interceptions and passed 66 percent in Thursday’s College Football Playoff semifinal against 10th-seeded Miami.
