Oklahoma Sooners defender enters NFL Draft

Oklahoma Sooners defensive back Robert Spears-Jennings announced his intention to enter the NFL draft on Tuesday. The senior from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, spent all four seasons of his collegiate career with the Sooners, playing immediately as a true freshman as part of the 2022 recruiting class. He has exhausted his college eligibility.

Spears-Jennings became a full-time starter at safety for the University of Oklahoma in 2024 and again in 2025 when the program reached the College Football Playoff. The local product was a key part of Oklahoma’s defensive resurgence under head coach Brent Venables, who served as captain in Norman’s final year and was previously one of the Sooners’ three representatives at SEC media days.

Spears-Jennings totaled 177 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 2 pass breakups and 2 interceptions in his college career. At 6-foot, 213 pounds, he has the size to play safety in the NFL, and he’s given himself a chance to get drafted and compete for a training camp roster.

The Sooners know they’ll be without Spears-Jennings after this year, and now they’re hoping another starting safety, Payton Bowen, can return next year and lead the way at the position. With Spears-Jennings out next season, Michael Boganowski and Jaden Hardy will take on larger roles at safety.
