Okamoto Homers Twice, Jays Beat Twins

Blue Jays 7 Twins 3

Kazuma Okamoto had a slow start to the season, but he has improved recently. Today he hit 2 home runs, 1 walk, 3 runs scored and 3 RBIs. In 31 games during his MLB career, he hit seven home runs and had 18 RBIs.

And, unlike yesterday, the pitching was good and the defense was good.

  • Patrick Corbin allowed 5.1 runs, six hits, two earned runs, one walk, and four strikeouts. He gave up a homer to Byron Buxton in the third inning, which also contributed to his ERA. Corbin didn’t have a great performance, but he came out when he needed to.

  • Jeff Hoffman gave up one run in the seventh inning. He hit a very mellow single in front of Okamoto. Then strike out. Next, Buxton landed a right jab from Andrés Giménez. I thought Jimenez should have stepped forward to get the ball, but he waited back and then took a bad throw to first down. This is called a hit, but I think it’s a glaring mistake. A hit single laid the foundation. Then Ryan Jeffers ripped a ball deep to the left side, but Daulton Varsho caught it on the edge of the track. It scored. Then there was another simple grounder, but that was third out. 16 pitchers. It’s probably 3 on, 3 down, since the first two singles were 3 feet and 5 feet (in the air), with projected batting averages of .050 and .200 respectively.

  • Tyler Rogers scored eight points. Outs, strikeouts, strikeouts.

  • Louis Varland pitched the ninth. He’s had a few days off, so he’ll probably play today anyway. He gave up a two-out infield single.

Offensively, we had 11 hits. Lenyn Sosa and Yohendrick Pinango (I’ll call them Lips because it’s easier to spell than Yohendrick). Okamoto hit two home runs (he was just 4 feet away from his third). Andrés Giménez, Flood (walk), and Jesus Sanchez Sanchez) received 0 points.

We score:

  • Two runs in the second inning: Wasiu and Sosa singled with one out and advanced to third on Simon Woods Richardson’s wild pitch. Lipps led off with a grounder and a home run from Josh Bell. Varsho should have been out to 10 feet, but Bell threw the pistol and missed his receiver. Both players scored.

  • Two runs in the fourth inning: Okamoto led off with a home run. With one out, Sosa doubled and Lipps singled him home.

  • Two runs in the fifth inning: Flood loaded the bases and Okamoto homered.

  • Pitch in the seventh: Okamoto walked, moved to second with one out, and scored on a Pinango single.

Jays of the day: Pinango (0.26 WPA) and Okomoto (0.24).

Other awards: Sanchez’s number is -.11.

It starts at 2:00 tomorrow. Dylan Seth (1-1, 2.87) vs. Connor Prillip (1-0, 4.00)
