Benfica has submitted a disciplinary complaint to UEFA against the Uruguayan midfielder over alleged violent behavior during the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie against Real Madrid.
The Portuguese club believes Valverde’s attack on defender Samuel Dahl in the 83rd minute of Tuesday’s match was not punished.

In that action, the referee did not call any foul and VAR did not intervene.
Benfica had hoped that UEFA’s disciplinary committee would make a decision before the second leg. It has done so but rejected the Lisbon club’s request for punishment.

Benfica’s statement was disappointed with UEFA’s ruling, adding: “Benfica regrets that UEFA has decided not to take any disciplinary action in light of clear evidence of an assault on Benfica player Samuel Dahl in the images.
“There is no doubt that this was a red card situation that was not sanctioned during the game and did not merit further punishment as a result of this expulsion.”
