Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon in talks to invest up to $60 billion in OpenAI, The Information reports

Jan 28 (Reuters) – Nvidia, Amazon and Microsoft are in talks to invest up to $60 billion in OpenAI, The Information reported on Wednesday.

The Information quoted a person familiar with the matter as saying that Nvidia, an existing investor whose chips power OpenAI’s AI models, is in talks to invest up to $30 billion.

Reports say long-time backer Microsoft is in talks to invest less than $10 billion. Amazon, a new investor, is in discussions to invest more than $10 billion and possibly more than $20 billion, it added.

OpenAI is about to receive term sheets or investment commitments from these companies, the report said.

Nvidia, Amazon, Microsoft and OpenAI did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment outside normal business hours.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report.

The Information said Amazon’s investment may be subject to separate negotiations, including a possible expansion of OpenAI’s cloud server leasing agreement with Amazon, and a commercial agreement for OpenAI to sell its products to Amazon, such as enterprise ChatGPT subscriptions.

This follows reports earlier this week that SoftBank Group was in talks to invest an additional $30 billion in OpenAI.

OpenAI is grappling with the rising cost of training and running its artificial intelligence models as competition from Alphabet Inc’s Google intensifies.
