Comedian Joe Rogan says people sometimes buy luxury goods and big houses to fill the void created by not living up to their true potential, but he believes these things rarely bring lasting satisfaction.
In November 2024, Rogan spoke on “The Joe Rogan Podcast” about the challenges that creatives face in their careers, saying that many comedians waste money on fancy cars, expensive items and drugs to fill the void that he believed was created by dissatisfaction with their jobs.
Rogan said of moving into a stylish North Hollywood apartment in 1994 that it was exciting at first, but the luxury and comfort eventually lost its excitement.
Don’t miss:
“I have a loft apartment with a pool table and a beautiful stereo, which I think is incredible, I have a beautiful apartment, which is awesome,” Rogan said. “After a while, it became my house, and that’s when I realized, oh, this is, just, the same feeling. People spend a lot of money on a lot of things, but they’re not really worth it. You don’t really get anything out of it.”
Everything else is “bullshit”
A house is where you live and relax, Rogan said. He said any safe and comfortable place can bring peace.
“You can relax almost anywhere that’s comfortable and safe, and that’s all you need,” Rogan said. “Then everything else is bullshit.”

“You Live in Hell”
Rogen talked about sitcoms of the 1990s and how they became popular even though many of them were “terrible.” Comedians who work on these shows for years make a lot of money but are often dissatisfied with their jobs, he said. No matter how much money you make, being dissatisfied with your job can feel like living in “hell,” Rogan said.
“If you do that, you’re living in hell,” he said. “You’re living in hell, which is crazy for a person to hear, ‘Oh, you make $50,000 a week, what are you talking about?'” When you can’t create something really good and you’re just doing it for the money, you feel trapped. “
