(FOX 5/KUSI) — Traffic on northbound Interstate 5 and surrounding streets along the central San Diego County coastline was snarled for hours Friday as police responded to an incident at the intersection of the interstate and Del Mar Heights Road.
All northbound lanes of I-5 were closed starting around noon due to police activity, leading to a massive backup that extended into the vicinity of the UTC area.

Traffic in the northbound lanes was directed from the Del Mar Heights Road exit, across the road and onto the on-ramp and back to the highway.

Northbound Interstate 5 near Delmar was closed Friday, causing massive congestion.
Transportation apps sometimes show it taking up to two hours to drive from downtown San Diego to Oceanside, while the typical drive distance is less than an hour.
As of 4 p.m., the northbound lanes in the area of Del Mar Heights Road remain fully closed.
