Nintendo Switch 2 Tipped to Support Backwards Compatibility

The Nintendo Switch successor will reportedly support backwards compatibility. A reliable gaming insider claimed earlier this week that the Switch 2 can play games released on the previous generation console. Nintendo confirmed earlier this year that the Switch 2 will be released next year. The company has yet to provide any official details about the upcoming console or possible backwards compatibility support.

Nintendo Switch 2 backwards compatibility

This information comes from tipster Nate the Hate (discovered by VGC ), who has a track record of leaking accurate information about games and consoles. Replying to a Reddit post about the Nintendo Switch 2, the tipster claimed: “It has backwards compatibility support.”

The source’s statement is consistent with previous reports that the Switch will be backwards compatible. A third-party Switch peripheral manufacturer said back in April that the Nintendo Switch 2 would be backwards compatible with both physical and digital games.

The latest Reddit post mentions rumors that the Switch 2 may be getting an update in September. The Reddit post builds on an X post from industry analyst David Gibson on Wednesday, which claimed that the Nintendo Switch 2 is likely already in production and that the upcoming console is expected to receive an update this month.

“No one seems to have noticed that Nintendo assembler Hosiden spent 2 billion yen on production equipment for its main entertainment customer (Nintendo) in fiscal 2025 and 1 billion yen on automation. I still expect news in September and a March 2025 release of the next device,” Gibson said in the post.

In May this year, Nintendo confirmed that it would announce a successor to the Nintendo Switch in the fiscal year ending in March 2025. The company also said it expects to sell 13.5 million Switch units this fiscal year. Nintendo has announced new games for Nintendo Switch as the iconic console enters its final lap. The new “Legend of Zelda” game “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” will be launched on Switch later this year.

Last month, GamesIndustry.biz claimed that developers had been told not to expect the Nintendo Switch 2 to ship this fiscal year. According to reports, developers expect the console to be available in April or May 2025.
