New Orleans Bound Amtrak Train With More Than 100 People Aboard Gets in Nasty Collision With an 18-Wheeler in Texas

Passengers and crew had a terrifying experience when an Amtrak long-distance train crashed into an 18-wheeler truck while traveling through Texas. On March 17, a train traveling from Los Angeles to New Orleans came into contact with the truck’s green trailer.

today “A vehicle came into contact with a train on Union Pacific tracks near Houston,” Amtrak said in a statement.

The incident occurred in Missouri City, about 20 minutes’ drive from Houston. There were only more than 90 passengers and 11 crew members on board. Fortunately, none of them were seriously injured. The truck driver was also reportedly uninjured. However, two people at the scene suffered minor injuries and required treatment.

Although the train did not derail, the truck overturned and leaked fuel, which was immediately attended to. It has been contained by hazardous materials personnel and does not pose an immediate threat to public safety. Firefighters were also called to the scene to deal with a small fire caused by the collision and extinguished the blaze.

“Passengers were removed from the train as a precaution. They will continue eastbound on charter buses,” Amtrak said in a statement.

Passengers spoke to ABC 13 Houston before they boarded the bus, calling the incident “surprising” but saying they were ultimately thankful they were not injured.

Oddly enough, this isn’t the only train accident in Texas.

On March 18, a second train accident occurred between Rosenberg and Richmond, this time involving a 23-car derailment, blocking roads in historic downtown Richmond, Texas.

Richmond police said in a statement on Facebook that fortunately there were no casualties and the incident occurred in a non-residential area. Officials believe there is no need to evacuate the city due to the presence of hazardous materials, but caution that cleanup efforts could be lengthy.
