Finding Mother Nancy Guthrie today Nearly a month into host Savannah Guthrie’s show, authorities still have not identified a suspect in the case. The Guthrie family is offering a $1 million reward for information leading to the whereabouts of missing family members.
With the 84-year-old still missing, both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department made sudden personnel changes.
FBI, Pima County Sheriff’s Department cut officer numbers
Earlier this week, the FBI withdrew most of its officers and investigators from Tucson and sent them to Phoenix following a final search of Guthrie’s home. Just two days later, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department followed suit, withdrawing more officers from the case.
“This remains an active investigation and will continue until Nancy Guthrie is found or all leads are exhausted,” the statement read. “The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is refocusing resources to detectives dedicated to this case. Resource allocations may fluctuate as leads are developed and resolved. PCSD will maintain patrols in the Guthrie community.”
NewsNation’s Brian Entin explains that this appears to be an ominous sign for the case, though.
Why the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department may be moving personnel
Entin believes it “makes sense” for the FBI to return to Phoenix because of the amount of video evidence they need to produce.
“The fact that they’re going back to Phoenix doesn’t surprise me and I don’t think it’s going to have much of an impact on the investigation. It just doesn’t feel as active in Tucson. They’re still going to have a detachment of FBI agents stationed in Tucson,” he said.
“As far as the Pima County Sheriff’s Office is concerned, I’m told they are still keeping some detectives on the case, but it won’t be all detectives like before.”
The Guthrie family recently took action and appears to have installed a new security system at the 84-year-old’s home following a final FBI sweep.
